In the era of non-stop connectivity wherein data never sleeps, technology has made it possible for us to stay connected always. The moment we wake up you’re bombarded with emails clogging your inbox, to requests piling up, and notifications flickering in the background. Does this lead us to the thought that the very technology that was meant to enable our lives is limiting our human abilities by encouraging an always-on culture?
We receive 5x as much information today as we did in 1986. Within moments of assimilating the information, your attention is scattered. In today’s world of growing distractions and information overload, we have a very difficult task to stay focused in the Now amid the myriad thoughts. We are constantly entangled in the thoughts of the past as well as the future. However, we fail to be in the present moment, be in the Now. This is compounded by the lack of clarity due to our modern fast-paced world. Before you know it, something or someone has rubbed you the wrong way, and you’ve reacted automatically with frustration, impatience, or rage—in other words, you’ve found yourself acting in a way you never intended.
Close your eyes. Think and feel…. Which is the world you’re currently living in? Is it a beautiful world, full of love, empathy, care and happy people? Are you happy? Or is it a crazy world where the mobile phones are your masters, the easy connectivity causes you to work non-stop, where demands and wishes caused you to become all stressed up?
On one side we have the inspiring stories of Leaders who have made a difference not only to the organization but also the society they live through their mindful actions. On the other side, we have leaders who lost sight of their values, lacked self-awareness and got distracted by success and its rewards- Money, Power and Recognition.
Mindfulness helps leaders become more self- aware
With greater self-awareness comes more empathy towards self and people around you that result in better decisions and actions. Better actions create a movement of positive mindset shift within organizations. Thus, cultivating Mindfulness in Leaders is not only a practice but a way of life. Leaders are often regarded for their firm values, strong personality, and the ability to make deep, strategic decisions. But apart from all of these, the most important characteristics of a leader is how they treat those around them especially employees. A true leader is a guiding light and beacon of hope for their employees by showing them unwavering kindness and being compassionate and mindful with them, regardless of their situations.
Now is the time to make small life changes for a mindful beginning
Talking about Change and a new beginning, there is a famous quote by Mahatma Gandhi “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” It starts from the way we see ourselves, it impacts every facet of our lives. When we change our perspectives positively, we attract positive energies, we change our lives, we change our world.
