Wednesday 12 July 2006 @ Punggol PCF

His personal philosophy is “invest in myself”.

His ideology is “Build it and they will come – Field of Dreams”.

And his word of wisdom” I’m prepared to take pain with you”.

Rory or better known as a series-entrepreneur drabbled on new-aged philanthropy, free-market sustainability and topics on social entrepreneurship.

His anecdote on “Time and Talent” is the battlefield among aspiring social entrepreneurs. He reinforced the concept of social entrepreneurial; it is about using market model to pluck and fill the social gap through a sustainable development. He also singled out the direction of today’s social entrepreneurial environment has becoming a new breed of career option whereby he quoted that 30% of Harvard Business School has planned to run for not-for-profit pursuits, a significant message towards boosting and promoting this “not-for-money but passion” entrepreneurship.

Some comments from our participants…

“I’ve learnt to put business first and solidify it before thinking about how to save the society.”
-Theresa Tan, Director, Women Make A Difference Ltd

“I got to know more of the significant contributions a social entrepreneur can do to his or her country or community. Apart from Freeplay, companies like Loreal, Body Shop and Unilever, have presented me the template to exemplify…and to drive my company to reach a new height, both being scalable(successful) and passionate (popular).”
-Carl King, Founder, Big Is Gorgeous Pte Ltd

“My evening is exciting. ….and one thing I took away from this forum is how to deal with IP rights in countries like China”
-Tea Zhi Hao, Student, Raffles Junior College

“A fantastic opportunity for young budding entrepreneurs to meet such a high profile speaker like Mr Stear. Quite a motivation! .……on a personal level, it is possible be so successful and at the same time you can be helping some many people.”
-Ahmed Aljunied, Student’s Technology Initiatives

The author of the book, “Second World” shared his insights and ideology with the audience on the subjects on geopolitics and globalization, the new world superpowers, local politics and governance.

He singled out China as the ‘promising” superpower besides the USA and the European Union and how this most populous country in the world with ½ the world population would impact on imperial progression and empowerment against poverty.

Our local politics was put to the table for a stimulating round of discussion; from the youth electorates’ expectation to policymaking, from inspired-modelled Singapore’s governance that becomes envious of others to its future role in global citizenry and the paradox on freedom of speech.

As Parag would sum up that the mantra of Singapore’s one keyword for success is “Confident”.

Here’s what the participants have to say about “In Conversation”.

“Paraq is an excellent speaker. He makes me learn and realise that Singapore is in fact one of the countries that being recognised by many others.”
-Florence Wong, Physiotherapist, Changi General Hospital

"The relevance of Singapore’s being a future global city in the setting of one of major super powers especially China…”
-Loke Choon Wai, Parkway Group Healthcare

“Apart from tonight’s forum, future In Conversation can also dwell with subjects that concern youth too. This will encourage more response from the youth community.”
- Dovelyn Quek, Dream Dove Pte Ltd

“The forum was quite fruitful. I must add that coming from a financial and banking sector, the knowledge that European Union is one of the super powers has really given me the tips in orchestrating my euro dollars’ programmes to come.”
Lily Hugh, Citicorps Limited

Andrey J. Zarur, President and Chief Executive Officer, BioProcessors Corporation, USA; Young Global Leader
June 21, 2006

The 2-hour forum was really an enjoyable and informative session for both professionals and students alike. Judging by the laughter index, the streaming of questions and the amount of scribbling done, it appeared that his lunchtime chat has inspired most of us.

Dr Andrey shared his insights on many relevant issues that “dramatically impact the global future” like global warming, the creations of live-saving biotechnological products and his contributions towards entrepreneurial landscapes.

As some of the participants would comments:

“He is very inspiring at several levels: -He is a young successful entrepreneur with break-through technologies. -The purpose of starting his business was to speed up medical testing in order to save lives. This is a very noble way to start a business because money was not the key driving force. -Wealth and fame did not intoxicate him. He was humble and shows concern for Global Warming and other social and environmental issues. -He is a source of inspiration for us to find meaning in life.”

    Jack Sim, World Toilet Organization
“It has been an educational as well enriching…I know more about life science and environmental issues. The one thing or perhaps two things I took away from this forum will be that I’m more environmentally-conscious and secondly how substitution in making cheap drugs become a life-saver to the world’s population”.

    -Kinsley Choo, Heartstring Engaged Ltd
“Singapore can benefit from forum of such nature. It’s worthwhile to attend, reasonable attractions to technopreneur like me.”

    Sein Y Chew. MarketAlwaysOpen
“The forum was very enlightening. As a student it gave me a first-hand exposure to view business in a different dimension. It is not just about making money, but also the ability to help others who are in need. The session was also a wake-up call for me and my friends about issues of global-warming”

    -Tiffany Teng, Singapore Management University
“It was an eye-opener for me as to the subject of Young Global Leaders and their contributions to the global needs. As for Dr Andrey, I was fascinated by his statement of him being ordinary and nothing special but however inspired us as how he had made a different to the world. His humbleness has struck a chord in touching our humanity.”

    -Sean Cheng, Ngee Ann Polytechnic
