In 2002, Kenny Low started City Harvest Education Centre (CHEC) to provide quality and effective education for second-chance youths and O School, a performing arts that generates revenue to offset CHEC’s rental and student bursaries. In 2007, Kenny won the Schwab Socual Entrepreneur of the Year Award for his efforts.
The winner was annouced at the Social Innovators Forum, an annual symposium on social entrepreneurship that is organised by Social Innovators’ Park (SIP). Ms Jocelyn Chng, CEO of Sin Hwa Dee Foodstuff Industries and an SIP director on the judging panel, said of their choice, “We found that the work Kenny is doing is really innovative, especially in helping youths get back into a school environment and getting them to be interested in their studies. We feel he is extrememly committed to doing so, and we hope that the international exposure he will gain as Schwab Social Entrepreneur of the Year will one day result in his efforts being replicated overseas.
